According to the Global White Lion Protection Trust, the African elders in the Sepedi and Tsonga communities of the UNESCO Kruger-to-Canyons Biosphere region have seen White Lions in the region for many centuries even though it was only recently being recorded in 1938 by Europeans. The unique White Lion gene is carried by certain of the tawny coloured lions in the region. As the commercial trophy hunting of lions continued in this region, the White Lions finally went extinct in the land of their origins in 1992. In 2004, the Global White Lion Protection Trust commenced its reintroduction program and currently successfully reintroduced 3 prides of integrated White Lions to their natural endemic habitat. White lions are not a separate subspecies and they are not albinos. They have a condition known as leucism, caused by a recessive gene. It is simply a reduction in the colour pigments of the skin. The National Zoo and Aquarium is home to 2 White Lions; Brother and sister, Jake & Mischka. To celebrate the effort of reintroduction programs, join us for an unforgettable special private retreat at Jamala Wildlife Lodge in October 2024, to visit Jake & Mischka and getting close to many other endangered species, including Sun Bear, White rhinos, giraffe, tigers, Sri Lankan leopards, cheetah, etc., and learn how breeding programs in zoos and aquariums are contributing global conservation efforts to save species from extinction through preserving genetic diversity and reintroducing animals into the wild.
Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in a holistic journey of self-discovery and relaxation, where you can unwind, renew and reconnect with yourself, align your body with nature's rhythms, and return home with a deeper sense of calm, vitality and purpose.
